Stories about artificial intelligence, or AI, are everywhere. From customer service desks to emergency rooms. From classrooms to farms. And by now, we’re all familiar with its amazing capabilities. But while AI gets the attention, Cloud computing is always there, too — in the background — enabling ground-breaking AI deployments.

AI works because it can sift through massive amounts of data seemingly at warp speed (or faster!). And where that data lives and where it is accessed proves that AI can’t do it alone. Because the crucial data that AI needs lives in the Cloud. Without Cloud computing, AI would cease to function with its all-encompassing ease.

IBM knows AI. Because IBM knows Cloud.

When it comes to Cloud, IBM is among the leaders in helping support and expand AI. IBM’s CEO Arvind Krishna has described three points of focus for the company moving forward: hybrid Cloud, AI, and (on the horizon) quantum computing.

And the future is already here. IBM’swatsonxis an AI and data platform with a set of AI assistants designed to help scale and accelerate the impact of AI with trusted data. Already, watsonxhas addedAI-generated commentary to tennis match highlights in the US Open app. And IBM and NASA are usingwatsonxtospeed the analysis of satellite images and boost scientific discovery.

IBM’s understanding of AI, in fact, is rooted in its history with Cloud computing. This means learning about the Cloud is a vital step that technology and business professionals can take to improve their skills and help their organizations thrive.

To that end, the IBM Center for Cloud Training offers a broad set ofcurricula and certificationsaimed at learners of all levels, from Cloud beginners to advanced professionals. Through IBM Cloud training, learners can better understand the Cloud.

The future of AI is in the Cloud

Consider the AI technologies that Cloud computing empowers: IoT, chatbots, business intelligence, AI as a Service (AIaaS), cognitive Cloud computing. The list could go on. And it will, as AI is incorporated further into the technology that powers modern life.

On the positive side,AI has improved radiologists’ ability to detect breast cancer by 20%. And drones outfitted withoptical gas imaging (OGI) cameras assisted by AIcan sniff out hydrocarbon gasses, such as methane, to recognize hazardous leaks when they occur in an oil and gas operation.

On the less favorable side, AI still has to prove reliability, for example in both autonomous vehicle performance and facial recognition capabilities.

IBM is optimistic about AI and its potential. Our CEO Arvid Krishna notes that the complexities and costs of doing business must be overcome in order to improve the global standard of living. “The answer,” he says, “is not just technology, but artificial intelligence.”

And understanding the Cloud is the key to harnessing the power of AI.
