Alabama's last dry county legalizes alcohol sales (1)

Pop the champagne! Two cities inAlabama’s last completelydry county voted to legalize the sale of alcohol on Tuesday.

Clay County was the last completely dry county in the state, which has several other counties that are considered “dry,” but have cities that allow the sale of alcohol.

That means not one of the local municipalities or cities in Clay County could sell alcohol prior to thevote, according toTammy Andrews, who speaks on behalf of the Clay County Chamber of Commerce.

But those days are over.

On Tuesday, residents ofLineville and Ashlandvoted overwhelmingly to legalize the sale of alcohol.

In Ashland, 65% voted to legalize the sale of alcohol and in Lineville, 75% voted in favor, Andrews said.

Margaret Barchine, of the National Alcohol Beverage Control Association, says for most states the decision to be wet or dry is carried out on “an extremely local level."

“Even if it’sa dry county they may have cities or towns that arewet,” Barchine said.

In the U.S., only seven states stillhave completely dry counties, according to Barchine. She said there are alsoeight states thathavecounties which are considered wet, but havedry localities.
