Hi, welcome to the Oily Skin Club, where I have long reigned as self-appointed president. I’ve been through more oil-blotting papers than I can count, tried every moisturizer for oily skin, and have come to know every worthwhile face wash for oily skin very well—so I’m excited to share my wisdom with you, and tell you exactly which face washes are best for your skin type. As dermatologist Kavita Mariwalla, MD, and owner of Mariwalla Dermatology, has told Cosmopolitan, oily skin happens when your sebaceous glands produce too much sebum (the natural waxy ~stuff~ in your skin that keeps it hydrated).
There are a few different causes for oily skin, Dr. Mariwalla explains, including hormones, genetics, oil-packed products clogging your pores, or washing your face with a harsh face wash that’s stripping all your natural moisture away, causing your skin to over-compensate. And that's where a good face wash for oily skin comes in—these formulas are packed with hydrating yet oil-absorbing ingredients that will help restore balance to your skin, without leaving it shiny.
And naturally, we found the best face washes for your oily skin, handpicked by me and the experts. Wanna just grab a cleanser and get on with your life? Here's a sneak peek:

Pros
- Doesn't strip your skin
Cons
- Will need to follow with another cleanser
When I finally learned that traditional cleansers and gels were too stripping for my skin, I turned to cleansing balms, which turned out to be the magic non-drying skincare step I needed, since there are no harsh cleansing ingredients involved. Smooth this balm over your makeup-caked face and then rinse or wipe away with a cloth for a clean, hydrated face.
THE REVIEWS: "Great cleansing balm for double cleanse," writes one reviewer. "I couldn’t believe the amount of makeup and gunk that it removed from my face"

How to choose a face wash for oily skin
Figure out the cause of your oil
Whenever you’re dealing with a frustrating and unknown skin issue, it’s best to start by chatting with a dermatologist (either IRL or via a virtual derm appointment) to determine what’s actually causing the oiliness. Once you’ve figured out what's behind your oily skin (hormones, irritation, acne, genetics, etc.), it’ll be easier to pick the right face wash (like a moisturizing cleanser or an oil-free cleanser).
Look at the ingredients
This is where you have to do a bit of detective work. Once you’ve determined the source of your oily skin, you can look out for the right ingredients. If your skin is dry or dehydrated, look for moisturizing ingredients like jojoba oil or hyaluronic acid, and avoid cleansers made with alcohol. If the oil in your skincare products is actually causing your skin to look oily, opt for oil-free skincare products instead.
