Hello tech-savvy readers! Today I’m diving headfirst into the world of AI translation! DeepL, the AI translator that’s giving human translators a run for their money. But before I start gushing about this digital wonder, let’s get down to business.

  • Hands-on Difficulty: 1

- Project Cost: 0

- Human Salary: 2000–6000/month for English translation, or 50 bucks per thousand words

- Software and tools required: None

- Computer requirements: None

  • Recommendation Index: 5
  1. Multilingual Content Creation: Developers, designers, producers, and others who need to create or modify multilingual websites, applications, games, videos, ads, and more.
  2. Quick and accurate understanding: Individuals or teams who need to understand foreign language content quickly. (From overseas customers to English writers looking to boost their international flair, DeepL’s got you covered!)
  3. Cross-Language Services: Customer service, teachers, lawyers, doctors, and anyone else who needs to bridge language gaps. (API interfaces included)
  4. Social Media Porters: Those who need to translate social media posts and comments. (Because who doesn’t want to be a global influencer?)
  5. Language Teachers: no more hand-made correction work

- DeepL can’t fully replace the skill and creativity of human translation. It may miss cultural nuances, context, and tone, or produce some wonky translations. (So no Shakespeare translations, please!)

- Data security and privacy might be a concern, as users’ text might be uploaded to the cloud or accessed by third parties. (Remember, nothing on the Internet is really private, folks!)

- It’s not a one-size-fits-all solution. Some jargon, dialects, slang, abbreviations, or complex formats may stump it. (And yes, it only supports 31 major languages.)

But hey, no tool is perfect, right? DeepL’s website: www.deepl.com

I put DeepL to the test with Chinese and English. As we know, Chinese is notoriously difficult to translate. But guess what? DeepL blew my expectations out of the water!

The translation is quick, taking less than a minute to translate a document of less than 10 pages. The test is divided into two aspects: different file formats and different areas of translation quality.

  1. The first aspect involves legal English translation into Chinese, where the format is preserved and the content is accurate.

2. Additionally, the English to Chinese translation of specialized vocabulary can achieve a score of 95.

The document is a PDF about PIKA prompt words, and when using DeepL to translate individual words, the translations may appear strange. For instance, ‘pika’ is the name of a software, but it refers to itself as the ‘mouse rabbit’, causing it to mistranslate ‘shot’ as ‘shot’. Additionally, there is the ‘crab shot’, which even photography enthusiasts may not be familiar with.

The file can be translated in 20 seconds and opened for reading, but subscription is required for modification as the PPT is encrypted. Although some people may criticize it, I believe it is a good product worth purchasing. It is important to value knowledge in order for companies to improve.

As someone who works in branded retail, I can confirm that the current translations are accurate from a business perspective. The only issue was with the abbreviation LW, which was not translated correctly last week. The software correctly understands basic abbreviations such as TBC, but it mistranslates the brand name ‘Juicy’ as ‘juicy’.

Surprisingly, it even translates tables within PowerPoint presentations accurately, saving a lot of time. However, if the table is in picture format, it cannot be translated.

DeepL’s free version allows you to translate up to 3,000 words, but with a free registration, you get a generous 5,000 words. Plus, you can post long texts in multiple parts, and files up to 5M are covered for 3 per month. (No need to break the bank, folks!)

1. Grammar assistant: It’s not just a translation tool. DeepL can be a plug-in in your office, acting as a translation or grammar assistant. (Think of it as your personal language tutor!)

2. Rewrite: tested it with one of my English articles full of humorous metaphors. When translated into Chinese, the humor didn’t quite hit the mark. But guess what? DeepL offers different styles of translation, so I tweaked it, and voila! (A must-have for international students and bloggers!)
