What are the fundamentals in drawing? ›

The Principles of Art (balance, contrast, emphasis, movement, pattern, rhythm, and unity/variety) represent how the Elements of Art (line, shape, color, value, form, texture, and space) are used by an artist to create a painting, drawing, or other work of art.

But to make it simpler, focus on basic forms first—spheres, ellipsoids, boxes. Build scenes out of them, first simple, then more complex. Everything can be built out of these simple blocks, so once you grasp the concept, you'll have a solid foundation to draw anything you want.

Rule #1 suggests that it's easier to work from the general to the specific rather than the other way around. Start with the largest shape you see. Forget everything else and draw that shape.

- Perspective

It can be one of the most daunting fundamentals of drawing to the beginner, but I urge you to set emotions aside and do some simple perspective exercises. Most often, perspective comes in one, two, or three vanishing points, and we use these to get interesting and accurate results in our drawings.

An essential skill to learn as a beginning artist, whether drawing or painting, is perspective. If you want to achieve three-dimensional art, knowing perspective is key, including how to find the horizon line, determine the vanishing point and an overview of linear perspective.

Art students who would like to become fine artists, start their art education in art schools from the age of 9 or 10. By the end of this school, which takes 4 to 5 years, they have very good drawing, painting, decorative arts, composition, and sculpting skills as well a firm knowledge of the history of arts.

Blending is one of the most important shading techniques to learn – and probably the one you'll use the most. It's a drawing method that's used to smooth away lines, creating soft gradients and a professional finish.

You can take anywhere from two to six months to learn the basics of traditional art forms and be able to fully learn one in a year if you give it your all.
