How to tell if Polychromos pencils are real? ›

Genuine Polychromos have the following marks. 1) Germany. 2) Colour name is in both German & English. 3) It should have 9201- before the colour number.

For detailed artist drawings, we recommend using a smooth paper, such as Bristol board, Strathmore toned pads, Hot Press Watercolour Paper or textured Pastelmat. Polychromos Pencils adhere to many rough surfaces too, such as wood, stone, leather and metal.

You get an extra 30 pencils with the Prismas and at a cheaper price, but the singles are a bit more expensive to restock your set. Polys really are much better quality though, so I can see why they command a higher price than the Prismas.

Unfortunately, Lilac and Lavender were discontinued due to a raw material discontinuation. As we reviewed the potential solutions and attempted to adjust the formula to get a color match, we determined that a color match would not be possible.

Prismacolor colored pencils are professional grade and cost over $1 per pencil. Compared to cheaper brands such as Crayola, Prismacolors are infinitely more pigmented and smooth. When used on paper, these pencils don't leave white spaces that take away from the drawing like other brands.

Polychromos have very saturated colors, and have a harder “lead” which means they will last longer than let's say water soluble color pencils which are soft. They are great to work in layer, provided you don't press too hard, and you can blend color with them (again not pressing hard).
