This recipe for my grandmother’s scalloped potatoes is super easy to put together using simple ingredients found in your pantry. Made with golden potatoes, milk, butter, and flour. It’s a match made in heaven with a homemade meatloaf.

Grandma’s scalloped potatoes were nothing short of a masterpiece. She loved simple recipes that could feed a crowd.

The thinly sliced potatoes with milk and just a hint of nutmeg, garlic, seasoning salt and pepper, and the secret ingredient: onion soup mix! Her kitchen transformed into a haven of warmth and comfort.

The savoury aroma that danced through the air wrapped around us like a familiar embrace. Grandma would always make meatloaf with these scalloped potatoes for a delightful homemade dinner.

It was the scent of home, of cherished memories, and of a love for simple, hearty fare.

The secret Ingredient

The real secret ingredient for this scalloped potato recipe is a packet of Lipton Onion Soup Mix.My grandma loved using Lipton Onion Soup Mix in so many of her recipes. From meatloaf, to roasts and here in the scalloped potatoes. It just adds a real umami salty boost to so many dishes.

What no cheese?

I studied other scalloped potatoes and discovered that most scalloped potato recipes have cheese on top! Well my grandma’s recipe does not call for cheese. I felt so strange making her recipe and resisted the urge to top off with a heaping mound of shredded cheddar. I am glad that I did! You will see that it is packed so much with flavour that you will not need to add cheddar or any kind of cheese.
