How long does it take to learn drawing skills? - Drawing Academy (1)

Question from Fatima

I love drawing and I wish to be excellent in this domain. So, my question is how can I be excellent and how can I get benefit from this experience… I mean financially?

I feel that learning drawing takes a long time. Do you have any advice on how to do it faster?

Fatima

Feedback from Vladimir London, Drawing Academy tutor

Dear Fatima,

Many thanks for your questions.

Drawing is a skill. As with any skill, it is not inborn, but developed. To become very good at any skill, you need to learn the necessary information, methods and techniques. This is fully applicable to drawing. To become a good artist, you need to learn how to draw constructively, how to use perspective, how to measure proportions, how to render tonal values and so on. Above all, you need to put into practice the things you learn.

It takes 5,000-10,000 hours of practice to become very good at any skill; the same in drawing. To speed up the learning time, you need to have a professional art teacher or attend a very good art course. Learning on your own won’t bring the same results, nor would it be fast.

Regarding financial benefits, whatever job or profession you will have in life, the ability to draw will help. Drawing is a visual language of non-verbal communication. Learning this essential language and being able using it will bring you benefits in whatever career you want to pursue. Apart of financial benefits, you will also feel more capable and fulfilled having good drawing skills.
