How to get motivated and stay motivated as an artist. — Louise De Masi Watercolour Artist (2024)

Motivation for an artist is so important because it can impact your productivity and overall well being. You need to stay motivated to fuel your passion and to help you overcome obstacles. It’s related to your success and without motivation, self doubt creeps in and you may start to question whether it’s worth continuing as an artist.

For a decade, I found so much joy in painting with acrylics. Painting became a part of who I was. But then, out of nowhere, that passion just vanished. I couldn't wrap my head around it. It left me feeling lost, like a piece of my identity had slipped away. I went through a phase where I didn't pick up a paintbrush for a few years. Instead, I made the decision to go to university and pursue a career as a school teacher. However, deep down, I couldn't shake off that longing. I missed the artistic expression and it left me feeling very sad.

Then, after years of feeling lost, a glimmer of hope emerged in the form of watercolour. Once more I felt the warmth of artistic fulfilment and I was on my way again.

So how do you get back on track when you lose your motivation for painting?

I’m glad you asked. I have a few tips to reignite your passion.

Establish a routine

Create a consistent schedule for your artistic practice. Set aside dedicated time for creating art, even if it's just for half an hour each day. A regular routine helps establish a habit and ensures that you consistently engage with your art.

The key message I took away after reading Atomic Habits by James Clear is that by harnessing the power of tiny habits, we can transform our lives and achieve extraordinary results. If we implement small, consistent changes in our habits and focus on the process rather than the outcome, we can make remarkable progress and achieve long-term success.

Find inspiration

Surround yourself with sources of inspiration. Explore different art forms, visit galleries or museums, read books or articles about artists you admire, or engage with other artists in your community. Expose yourself to new ideas because other peoples’ creative work can spark motivation and ignite your own creativity.

I have a private Pinterest board where I pin artwork that I admire. Whenever I look at the board I am flooded with new ideas and excitement. The board has become an invaluable resource and a constant reminder of the limitless possibilities that await.

Switch mediums or include other mediums in your work

It worked for me, it might work for you. Changing mediums or using mixed media, opens up a whole new world of inspiration and it challenges you to approach art from a different angle. The unfamiliarity of a new medium can invigorate your creative mind and generate a sense of excitement. It will encourage you to experiment and embrace imperfections. This freedom can lead to unexpected discoveries and it might rekindle the joy of artistic expression.

Seek out Artistic Communities

Creating art is a lonely pursuit so try connecting with other artists, join art communities, or participate in workshops and classes. Surround yourself with like-minded individuals. Art groups can provide support, feedback, and a sense of belonging. Sharing experiences and ideas with fellow artists can help you stay motivated and inspired.

Share your work

This is a powerful motivator for me. When I have an engaged audience for my work it validates my creative efforts and it boosts my confidence and self belief. It encourages me to continue to create and strive for excellence. Knowing that others are eagerly awaiting your creations can help you stay committed to your artistic practice. Share your work on Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, LinkedIn - wherever you can.

Reflect on why you chose to become an artist

Remind yourself of why you chose to pursue art in the first place. Reflect on the personal meaning and fulfilment it brings you. Reconnecting with your underlying passion and purpose can reignite motivation during challenging times. Consider the unique connection between your art and your identity. Reflect on how art has shaped your perception of yourself and how it has become an integral part of who you are.

Continue to learn

Maintain a curious and open mindset. Seek opportunities to learn and grow as an artist. Attend workshops or take courses to expand your skills and knowledge. Embracing lifelong learning keeps motivation alive by fuelling your desire to improve and evolve. Use it or lose it!

Have more than one painting on the go

Sometimes it’s beneficial to be working on more than one painting at anytime.

If you feel stuck or uninspired with one painting, you can shift your focus to another painting. This prevents stagnation and monotony and it might foster a sense of excitement and discovery.

Take breaks and be kind to yourself

Burnout can dampen motivation, so it's important to take regular breaks and practice self-care. Painting can be exhausting so allow yourself time for rest. Take some days off and relax. Do activities unrelated to art. Exercise!

And my final pearl of wisdom:

Embrace the journey

Remember, the artistic journey is not just about the end result but also the process itself. It's a path filled with ups and downs, challenges and triumphs. Motivation may waver at times, but that doesn't mean your passion has disappeared. It's a natural part of the creative cycle.

Be patient with yourself and embrace the ebb and flow of inspiration. Understand that motivation is not a constant state but a flame that can be reignited. Allow yourself the freedom to explore, experiment, and take breaks when needed. Trust in your artistic instincts and let your creativity unfold at its own pace.

Keep painting, keep exploring, and never stop nurturing your artistic spirit. Your unique voice deserves to be heard, and your art has the power to touch hearts, arouse emotions, and create meaningful connections. So, let motivation be your guiding light, and let your artistic journey unfold with a renewed sense of purpose, resilience, and joy.
