Hanging pictures without damaging the tiles

For very different reasons it not recommended to drill holes into a wall in some apartments. Power lines that run in the underground directly under the plaster are only one possible reason for this. Especially in the kitchen or bathroom, where a large part of the room is tiled, you should avoid drilling holes. Even the do-it-yourselfers among us often dare not drill into tiles for fear of damaging them.

Especially when drilling into tile wall, there is a risk that the tile will shatter or suffer irreparable damage. Often there is then only the possibilty to repair the tile on the wall or to replace the tile completely. Once the hole has been drilled, the holes created by the drilling are very difficult to close again because of the dowels.

In many rented apartments, the drilling of tiles is not permitted or may only be carried out in agreement with the landlord. Therefore, you should only cover tiles with plugs and screws or with a nail if it cannot be avoided. Before you start drilling, you should already have checked that there are no water or power lines in the wall behind the planned drill hole. You can mark the position of the borehole with a small felt-tip pen on the tile. Afterwards you can mark this area with a small nail or screw. After that, it is best to stick transparent adhesive tape in the shape of a cross over the torn area. In this way, you can prevnt your tiles from spalling when drilling later.

For the choice of the right drill we recommend you to pay attention to the underground. A tile and glass drill is best suited for smooth surfaces. Even better are water-cooled diamond drills, which are cooled by a small water tank. This drill avoids excessive heating of the tile and reduces the risk of damage to the substrate. During the actual drilling process, you should make sure that you place the drill at a right angle to your wall and drill through the tile with very low pressure and at low speed. Once the hole has been drilled and the substrate has not been damaged, you can sink a dowel into the hole and screw a screw into the dowel. Our tip: If you want to avoid damage to smooth surfaces, you can first drill a hole in the tile with a small drill bit. When using larger drills later on, the hole in the tile can be enlarged step by step without risking spalling of the tile. It is also easir and more precise to work with a drilling machine, as it has a better grip in the previously drilled hole.

Hanging pictures on tiles with adhesive tape or hanging strips

Simple double-sided adhesive tape can be a good, simple and above all a very quick solution. With a double-sided adhesive tape you can hang small, lighter pictures securely and firmly on your wall without drilling a hole into the tile. The large adhesive manufacturers such as Tesa or Pattex have long since recognized the trend of gluing pictures to the wall instead of drilling, and have been offering so-called adhesive strips for some time.

The way it works is identical to a simple adhesive tape: The Powerstrips have an adhesive surface on both the front and back. One adhesive surface is firmly pressed to a clean and smooth surface, for example the tiles of your bathroom, for a few seconds. Press your picture firmly against the other side of the glue strip so that it also sticks to the wall.

Depending on the product and accessories, the adhesive strips permanently hold images of up to two kilos per strip. Thanks to the innovative adhesive strips, the worst gluestrips can be applied and removed without damaging the wall. No need for nails, screws or tape. The adhesive strips are also suitable for various surfaces, e.g. for paints, wood, metal, glass and tiles. However, there is often the problem that you cannot remove the glue completely without leaving a residue. What remains are unsightly adhesive residues that contaminate your tiles.

Another method of attaching your pictures to tiles are so-called adhesive nails. Adhesive nails are a real alternative to dowels and screws. With glue nails you can fix picture frames but also many other objects on different surfaces like metal or glass. You can also use mounting tapes to permanently attach things to the wall. Mounting tapes are self-adhesive tapes designed for mounting directly on the wall. Most mounting tapes are even suitable for outdoor use and in damp rooms. The disadvantage of these methods is that neither hooks nor mounting tape hold on to sensitive surfaces such as wallpaper or plaster.

A tip for removing such adhesive residues is warm water in combination with washing-up liquid. Glas and porcelain can be soaked in it very well. The adhesive residues will come off and can be easily removed. You can also warm the glue with a hair dryer. The adhesive residues heat up and can be removed without much scratching. By the way, this also works quite well for wallpaper. The ultimate tip for all dirty tiles in your bathroom or kitchen is a razor blade. Before you resort to special cleaners here, you can remove the glue with a razor blade fine and fast.

Hanging pictures on tiles by using assembly adhesives

If you want to hang heavier pictures on your tiles, you have to stronger mounting glue. Most assembly adhesives are designed for significantly higher loads. You can even hang a heavy picture with a frame on the tiles in the bathroom. Assembly adhesive is offered in small tubes as well as in larger catridges. In order for the mounting adhesive to develop its full adhesive power, you must apply the adhesive to your tiles in waves or in vertical strands. You must then press your picture or picture frame firmly against the wall with the applied adhesive.

Since the glue does not harden directly, you have the advantage, compared to the glue strips, that you can adjust your picture correctly. This also leaves you more time for corrections. Removing the mounting adhesive is a difficult task. It is best to try to get behind your picture with a spatula or a knife to cut through the adhesive strand again. However, without any permanent residue on the wall or minor damage to the tiles, removal is virtually impossible.
