Is Dancing a Skill or a Talent? (1)

Most children and adults can learn how to dance and acquire the skill. However, achieving a world-class status may require something beyond skills and practice. A bit of talent and lots of luck may play a huge role in making a certain dancer achieve fame and massive success.

Is dancing a skill or a talent?

You’ve probably heard about the 10,000 hours of deliberate practice to achieve mastery. But to be a good or decent dancer, it may only require some classes and a few actual dance performances on stage and in front of crowds. The dance classes are important to have a solid foundation and proper guidance. On the other hand, the actual performances are also important for gaining exposure and confidence. Performing on stage is crucial for completing the learning experience.

Perhaps you’ve already seen some who can quickly pick up the movements and dance gracefully. It’s true that there are those who have the natural talent where everything flows to them easily. For the rest of us we have to earn the skill or enhance our talent through practice and hard work. It’s especially the case with ballet where it takes a lot of discipline and early initiatives to get into the field.

It’s tough to pursue the field of dancing as a career because there are barriers in place. But as a hobby or being enthusiastic, it’s available to almost everyone. It’s especially the case for young children where their brains and bodies are still rapidly developing. They can still easily pick up new skills because they’re in the stage of forming their core brain architecture and crucial neural connections.

At that early age it’s also an amazing opportunity to build their social skills and self-esteem. Dancing and practising with their peers can enhance the classes’ fun experience. It even gets better because of dance performances here and abroad.

That is what we do here at Dance on Q. We want it to be a fun and supportive experience for children. We also want the learners to explore the field and help them decide for themselves if professional dancing is indeed their path. To learn more about Dance on Q, you can visit our About page.
