This made-for-television movie tells the true story of the relationship between soldier Barry Winchell and Calpernia Addams, and the events that led to Barry's murder. The program begins at the "Miss Tennessee Entertainer of the Year Pageant" -- a drag talent show -- where Calpernia lip-syncs to Peggy Lee's "Fever." Calpernia then begins to tell the "terribly tragic" love story between her and Barry. Next, the narrative moves to Fort Campbell, Kentucky, as Barry reports for duty with the 502nd Airborne "Screaming Eagles." Sergeant Carlos Diaz recognizes that Barry has had problems in his past, but nevertheless assigns him as a grenadier. Settling into his barracks, Barry meets the other men in his unit, including his brash roommate Justin Fisher. Immediately, Barry and Justin butt heads over Barry's smoking. The next morning, Justin wakes Barry for formation, though he arrives late and is forced to do push-ups as punishment. Next, the unit goes on a march and Barry is verbally abused throughout for being unable to keep up. Later that night, Justin realizes that Barry is M.I.A. but he still reports that his whole unit is present. The next morning, Barry finally arrives back in camp, angered at Justin and the others. One night, Justin wakes Barry up, forcing the "disgrace" to clean his part of the room. Barry tells Justin that he is learning disabled, and a seemingly understanding Justin offers him some Ritalin. Meanwhile, Calpernia discusses how she will soon enter "the story....
