Officials at North East and Northside ISDs have approved the 2024-25 academic calendars for their respective school districts.
The background
The Northside ISD board on Dec. 12 approved a 2024-25 school year calendar that has classes starting Aug. 19 and ending May 29.
According to NISD’s 2024-25 calendar, student holidays and staff development days are slated for Nov. 5, which is also Election Day, and Feb. 17.
Winter break in Northside will be held Dec. 23-Jan. 6, and spring break is set for March 10-14. Student holidays and teacher planning days are scheduled for Oct. 14, Jan. 6 and April 21. Bad weather days are tentatively set Feb. 17 and May 30.
Janis Jordan, NISD’s deputy superintendent for curriculum and instruction, said now that Northside is a District of Innovation, the district is using its newfound state-supported flexibility to start a school year a week earlier in August and end the school year in May instead of June.
What else?
The NEISD board on Dec. 11 approved a 177-day school year calendar for 2024-25, when classes will begin Aug. 12 and conclude May 22.
Esmeralda Muñoz, executive director of learning support services, said most middle and high school teachers favored the 177-day calendar over a 180-day calendar.
According to North East’s 2024-25 calendar, holidays will include Election Day, Nov. 5. Students go on winter break Dec. 23-Jan. 2 and will have spring break March 10-14. Bad weather makeup days are scheduled for Feb. 17 and May 27.
Muñoz said they wanted to balance the amount of time instructing students and planning but also end the school year before Memorial Day rather than have to return for a few more days of class after a holiday weekend.
