Smudging is a technique of shading. A shading is first made on paper, then a finger or a soft material like a piece of cloth is used to smear the shading to make it smooth and well blended. In Grade 4, we will use different types of dry media such as pencils and charcoal to show the effects of light and dark.

Blending is one of the most important shading techniques to learn – and probably the one you'll use the most. It's a drawing method that's used to smooth away lines, creating soft gradients and a professional finish.

Smudging has the same effect as rubbing across a pastel drawing. Blending softens the transition between colors or hard edges. You can smear, smudge, or blend the colors in an entire image or in an editable area you define.

Take a tightly balled-up bundle of dried sage (mashkodewashk), light it from the bottom with a match, and place it on top of the tobacco. A small stream of smoke is all that's necessary. The smoke from the smudge can be pulled toward oneself with your hands or pushed by another person using a feather or an eagle fan.

When we smudge, we first cleanse our hands with the smoke as if we were washing our hands. We then draw the smoke over our heads, eyes, ears, mouths and our bodies. These actions remind us to think good thoughts, see good actions, hear good sounds, speak good words, and show the good of who we are.

Hatching may be the simplest way of shading, but that doesn't mean it's best for the piece you're working on. For instance, if you're wanting to create a smoother transition in terms of values- crosshatching is probably the way to go because you can more easily allow value flow.

The 4 shading techniques are blending, hatching, stippling, scumbling. There are also subcategories of each, including cross-hatching, contour hatching, pointillism. Each shading technique can be used in a variety of ways and they can be mixed with each other creatively.

Mark the direction of the light source in your drawing on your paper. Add a light value with the side of your pencil across your drawing for light- and mid-tones. Darken the core shadow where the light source ends by applying more pressure with your pencil. Lessen the pressure to make smooth transitions between values.

A tortillon (/tɔːrˈtiːjɒn/; also blending stump) is a cylindrical drawing tool, tapered at the end and usually made of rolled paper, used by artists to smudge or blend marks made with charcoal, Conté crayon, pencil or other drawing utensils.

This involves using a shade similar to your natural root color or one to two shades lighter to just slightly bump up your dark roots to blend with the lighter highlights. This can make the regrowth stage less noticeable and can give you an overall lighter, brighter feel along with your highlights.

Smudging is excellent and powerful, especially with a pliable material like charcoal. It can achieve nuanced gradation, it allows you to move things around a bit and also smooths away mess and problems with the marks on the paper.

In some cultures, four elements are represented in parts of the ceremony: fire in the burning of the sacred herbs, earth in the herbs themselves, air in the feather used to fan the smoke or the smoke itself, and water in the vessel to carry the herbs.

During the smudging, people through motions of their hands cover their body with the smoke; completion is indicated by turning the palms of the hands down. After each person has carefully smudged, the smoke is allowed to stop burning.
