If you have an extra $1,000 to spend at the Kentucky Derby, why not spend it on a tasty mint julep that will help raise money for retired thoroughbreds.On Monday — with this year's Derby just over 20 days away — Woodford Reserve unveiled the latest iteration of its $1,000 mint julep charity program.It's an annual tradition that helps raise money for Old Friends Farm, where past Derby winners are sent to retire peacefully.This year's high-priced mint julep honors the connections between Kentucky and France. The $1,000 mint juleps are sold in specially crafted cups that feature red rubies in the shape of a horseshoe.Only 148 cups were made. Of them, 18 gold-plated ones cost $2,500 while 130 silver ones cost $1,000.The drink will feature ingredients found at the Palace of Versailles to honor the Kentucky-French connection.
