  2. Choosing coloured pencils for professional use

Coloured pencils are used daily by many artists, illustrators, draughters, architects, designers and landscapers. In both creative and technical tasks, these utensils should meet the user’s specialised needs for precision, hue, and durability.

What factors make a coloured pencil right for professional use?

HOW TO IDENTIFY AND CHOOSE PROFESSIONAL-GRADE COLOURED PENCILS

Not allcoloured pencils are equal, or have the same characteristics. Some are made for children, and their lead and hand grips are designed accordingly. Others are destined for hobbyists and trained amateurs.

In looking for coloured pencils adapted for professional use, here are some criteria to consider.

Purpose: comics, architecture or illustration

Are you an artist, a designer, an architect or a colourist? Each profession has its own set of tools and techniques. Identify how your coloured pencils will be used. Do your projects require watercolour pencils or simply the normal pastel pencils? What drawing and colouring techniques will you use, and what kind of grip do you like to feel in your hand?

Lead pigmentation, smoothness and hardness

The lead inside a coloured pencilis made of wax and pigments that are either non-water-soluble or water-soluble, as in the case ofwatercolour pencils.

Concentration of the pigments, as well as their quality, influences the intensity and saturation of the pencils’ marks and thus of your drawings. The quality also determines how much the colours will fade over time. Caran d’Ache pencil leads are made from more than 100 pure pigments that are guaranteed to be of high quality, diversity and durability.

You will want a lead that goes down smoothly on paper and is either hard or soft, according to your needs.Soft leadis suited to colouring uniform and flat areas, creating overlays and shading: it provides good coverage.Hard leadis more suited for precise lines and hatching; it also wears down more slowly.

High-quality wood housing

Quality wood housing assures that a pencil is strong and easy to sharpen. That is why at Caran d’Ache we use cedar wood certified by the Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC™ certified wood) for all our coloured and graphite pencils.

Resistance to fading

At the request of the Colored Pencil Society of America, the American Society for Testing and Material (ASTM) developed a standard to classify the lightfastness of colours over time. The lightfastness classification indicates the level at which colours can resist fading when exposed to light. Caran d’Ache has achieved the highest rankings by this classification system.

A diverse colour palette

While there are no limits on how colours can be mixed, it is nevertheless practical to begin from an abundant selection of colours. Having a variety of shades at the ready broadens your options when blending new shades.

It can also save time— which is an advantage if you are a press artist, for example, where every minute counts.

FAQs

What kind of colored pencils do professional artists use? ›

In general, my favorite brands are Prismacolor, Caran d'Ache, Faber-Castell, and Derwent. They have proven track records and offer high-quality artist grade products. Because different colored pencils of every type can be used together on the same artwork, you needn't feel pressured to pick a brand and stick to it.

What are the best Caran Dache pencils? ›

Our range of LUMINANCE 6901® pencils is valued by art and design experts for superior lightfastness. This collection is unique in that it is the only collection of any brand to contain 81 colours rated Lightfastness I (LFI), the highest level of resistance according to the international standard ASTM D-6901.

Are caran d'ache pencils good? ›

Caran d'Ache pencils are higher quality and less likely to break. The downside to such a soft core is that Prismacolors are notorious for breaking. Some of the casings come damaged or split in the packaging and the cores are often off centre as the manufacturing has reduced quality over the years.

How do you make colored pencils look professional? ›

For this method, you can use the side of your pencil for a softer blended feel while colouring. Layer your pigments with light pressure, going over them several times to build up the colour. Smooth gradations can be created by adjusting the pressure applied to your colour pencils.

What is the best paper for professional colored pencils? ›

Stonehenge paper is hugely popular with colored pencil artists, who love the vellum texture and need 100% cotton, archival paper. The only caveat is that it's not as heavy as my other artist picks (250 & 320 gsm). If you're into wet media, test it before you start an important project.

Why is Caran D'Ache so expensive? ›

But as you know, Faber Castell is oil based and I really wanted to work with colored pencils that are wax based. One of the main reasons why Caran D'Ache Luminance is expensive is that their 80% rate of lightfastness. Which means that they don't fade easily when they are exposed to light.

Is caran d ache luminance wax or oil based? ›

Luminance are soft, oil based pencils which are designed not to produce a bloom. In this case Caran d'Ache tells us... LUMINANCE is a mainly oil based and direct pencil.

Where are Caran D Ache colored pencils made? ›

An icon of Swiss Made for many years, Caran d'Ache embodies Swiss excellence and know-how. Since 1915, Caran d'Ache has conceived and manufactured products exclusively in its Geneva workshops.

Are Prismacolor pencils professional? ›

Professional colored pencils like Prismacolor are also available in a wider range of colors than you'd find in a normal set of colored pencils. Prismacolors are available in 132 colors, which is ideal for creating fine art drawings.

What is better, Prismacolor or Faber Castell? ›

The Prismacolor drawing is a lot more vibrant, but is still significantly grainier than the Polychromos drawing. Another plus for Polychromos colored pencils is that they are oil-based. Prismacolors are wax-based, and sometimes a Prismacolor drawing will develop a thin, waxy film on the surface called wax bloom.

What is the difference between cheap and expensive colored pencils? ›

Not that cheap at all in the end. Second, professional-grade pencils have more pigment and less binder, which makes them appear more vibrant. And third, less evident for a beginning artist is that professional-grade pencils have richer and more unusual colors.

Why are prismacolors so good? ›

The pencils layer exceptionally well. It is, in fact, one of the reasons why people love Prismacolor colored pencils. However, you have to be pretty careful with layering because the pencils have pretty high pigmentation and tend to fill the fibers of the paper very fast.
