What is the difference between neocolor 1 and 2? ›

Neocolor 2 are water-soluble whereas Neocolor 1 aren't. This does mean that if you wanted to you could create effects by combining the two. For example if I use non watersoluble white pastel and a soluble green I get a wax resist effect. You can see here some other combinations too.

Selecting the right paper for your pastel works

Ingres paper is textured paper with fine ridges that is perfect for soft pastels as it binds the pigments and pastel dust to the surface. Watercolor paper for Neocolor® II Aquarelle. Velour paper which can be used with soft chalk or oil pastels.

While they do dry to a gently touchable finish, they are not permanent. I usually use a spray acrylic sealer after I have finished my piece. Alternatively, I often mix a setting medium like Mod Podge or Golden medium into my working water. This reduces working time, but means that your finish is a bit more durable.

Soft pastels are also the easiest to blend, the easiest to layer colours on top of one another and will cover larger areas the most quickly. Confusingly some soft pastels, for example Rembrandt, are a harder type of soft pastel.

Paul Rubens Haiya Oil Pastels

Paul Rubens, a Chinese art brand renowned for its affordable art supplies, presents two types of oil pastels, with Haiya oil pastels being one of them. Remarkably similar to the ones by Sennelier, they share the same bullet shape and exhibit a very soft and smooth texture.

The first and probably easiest way is with a crayon sharpener. The other way is with a little bit of sand paper. With the sand paper you would roll the Neocolor Crayon on its side at a slight angle to form the point.

Oil pastels are NOT wax crayons

While the two mediums share a few of the same ingredients, such as paraffin wax and pigment for colour, oil pastels contain the all-important oil that gives them their softer consistency and blending ability.

What is the difference between Caran d ache Neocolor I and II? ›

Caran d'Ache Neocolor wax pastels are professional artists' quality wax crayon. Caran d'Ache Neocolor II Wax Pastels are water soluble and can be blended with water after applying. The Neocolor I are not water soluble and can be used as a water resist in combination with water media.

Pastels are said to be one of the most permanent mediums of art, but to make this medium last longer, make sure to use acid-free archival paper and frame your painting correctly.

Oil pastels typically do not have an expiration date, but their quality can degrade over time, especially if they are exposed to extreme temperatures or humidity. If the pastels become dry, brittle, or difficult to work with, it might be a sign that they are no longer usable at their best.
