Can you explain your series numbers? - Strathmore Artist Papers (2024)
At Strathmore, we classify our papers with “Series” number. This is our way of categorizing our fine art papers with the intent of helping the artist determine what paper or Series best suits their needs. The Series also help clarify which level each of our papers fit into.
Selecting the right paper is one of the most important decisions an artist makes. Every artist has different needs, which is why we developed our Series classification system to help artists decide what works best for them. Their Series numbers include:
100 Series – Youth 200 Series – Good Vision Series - Good 300 Series – Better 400 Series – Best 400 Series Recycled – Best 500 Series – Premium

Strathmore 400 Series Watercolor Paper Pads include acid-free, cold press professional paper that's perfect for lifting and scraping applications. It's popular with watercolorists because of the fine and even washes that can be achieved. 5-1/2" x 8-1/2" and 12" × 12" sizes are tape bound.
You may have noticed that most of our products have a “series” number on them. Our series numbers are our way of classifying our fine art papers with the intention of helping you determine what paper best suits your needs as an artist.
One of the most versatile sheets Strathmore offers, this cream colored drawing paper is ideal for sketching and most finished work. Pad Features: Wire Bound sheets are micro-perforated and are Actual Size when removed at the micro-perforation.
Strathmore 500 Series Bristol boards are professional 100% cotton white drawing boards that can take repeated erasures and reworking without pilling or tearing.
Artist grade watercolor paper tends to be made with cotton fibers – thus making it more pliable and able to take more water abuse. This is where the term “rag paper” came from. Cheaper watercolor papers – on the other-hand – tend to be made of a mixture of wood pulp or a mixture of wood pulp and cotton fibers.
The most common are cold press and hot press. The names refer to the paper manufacturing process – as the paper pulp is pressed into sheets, it can be done with either a hot press, for a smooth surface, or a cold press, for a more textured surface.
Available in three sizes, these journals hold multiple sheets of 140 lb (300 gsm), acid-free 400 Series cold press watercolour paper, ideal for fine and even watercolour washes, as well as for lifting and scraping.
The Canson paper is actually a little see through (which can be annoying when you want to take a picture or scan) and smudges more than Strathmore. Other than that they're essentially the same. Strathmore sketchbooks are in general better quality than Canson but they usually cost a lot more.
The Strathmore brand is known worldwide as a maker of high quality papers for drawing, watercolor, oils, acrylics, and all manner of fine art. Strathmore papers for design and the applied arts including bristol, vellum, and construction paper are also in stock at Art Whale.
140lb is most commonly used, but may buckle without stretching. 300lb could withstand more water and is better when using a heavy wash or soaking the sheet. This paper will be more expensive.
Our 400 Series Marker paper was developed for fine artists who create finished art using markers. The smooth surface allows markers to glide and blend easily.
