Art activities for preschoolers are an essential learning experience.

A young child’s drawings or paintings represent their experiences. A painting is how a child explores and communicates their own ideas and feelings.

The opportunity to a draw a still life (an object) helps a child learn how to study closely and draw what they see and think. Drawing is a tool for a child to show you what they think and how they can communicate their own ideas about the object.

Integrating your learning with art to create a STEAM experience.

STEAM is the combination of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math. This STEAM activity for preschoolers combines Science and Art and integrates with learning more about the popular preschool theme, apples.

Arrange yourapples in an interesting way.

Allow time for your child to explore, touch, squeeze and play with the apple.

When your child is ready, encourage them to paint the apple. Ask open-ended questions to guide and prompt their recordings of what they notice about the apples?

What colors do you see in the apple?

What parts of the apple can you see?

What do you notice about the shape of the apple?

What else do you notice about the apple?

Encourageyour child to notice the details but allow your child the freedom to communicate their own story, feelings, and experiences about apples.

Remember what is important is the process of observing and using drawing/painting as a tool to communicate. It is okay if your child decided to paint a purple apple (and the apple really isn’t purple).
