VALUE & VALUE SCALES

Value: The lightness or darkness of a color
Value helps to show the lightness or darkness of something in a composition. An area can be determined as light or dark depending on where the light source is coming from. Light sources could be natural from the sun or moon or man-made by a lamp, candle, flashlight etc. Value makes one part of a composition more dominant then another. Pure

white

is the

lightest

value and

black

is the

darkest

value. All values in between are grays.

Assignment:

1.View demonstrations on value scales using HB/#2 pencil for lightest values. Values will appear darker by adding an additional layer, not necessarily by changing the pressure. DO NOT PRESS HARD, LAYER!

2. Complete the Value Scales given. Complete the step value scale and then complete the gradual value scale. Take your time. This should not be rushed. A careful development of layers is necessary to create a smooth gradual change in value. Overlapping, lightly cross hatched lines should be used. Avoid long monotonous strokes. Create concentrated, small marks. You should use a combination of HB, 2B, 4B, 6B pencils as indicated on your values worksheet.

HB -> HB/2B -> 2B -> 2B/4B -> 4B -> 4B/6B -> 6B (HB is the lightest, 6B is the darkest)

Four Forms Project:

Use a template to create the 4 forms composition. Use a sharpened HB pencil. Trace the shapes lightly. Use a circle tracer for the cirles. We will complete each object together in class with a demonstration first.

  • Day 1 square + shadow
  • Day 2, cone + shadow
  • Day 3, cylinder + shadow
  • Day 4, sphere + shadow
  • Day 5, Background + fixing up

: How tofill in a light value using HB pencil. Be sure to apply light pressure in overlapping layers. Play video.

Video 2:

Below. How to add a darker value. First complete a soft layer, then add an additional layer with the same amount of pressure. Gradually achieve a darker look by layering, pressing slightly harder, changing direction and overlapping, and using a darker pencil when necessary. Follow the numbered pencils shown on your value worksheet.
