A still life ( pl. : still lifes) is a work of art depicting mostly inanimate subject matter, typically commonplace objects which are either natural (food, flowers, dead animals, plants, rocks, shells, etc.) or human-made (drinking glasses, books, vases, jewelry, coins, pipes, etc.).
In an artwork, the subject matter is what the image literally depicts.The content of the artwork is what the image means. The most common is the: Factual meaning - the literal statement or narrative content in the work that can be directly apprehended because the objects presented are easily recognized.
There are two main kinds of art subjects: representational art, which depicts recognizable objects through forms like portraits, landscapes, and still lifes; and non-representational art, which is abstract and does not reference real-world objects, instead focusing on content and how the artwork is depicted.
Subject matter, simply put, is what the artwork is trying to portray. If, for example, you are looking at a painting of birds, then the subject matter is the birds.
The Subject matter is the literal, visible image in a work while content includes the connotative, symbolic, and suggestive aspects of the image. The subject matter is the subject of the artwork, e.g., still life, portrait, landscape, etc.
A tremendously respected abstract expressionist and minimalist, Agnes Martin released some of her most coveted work while in Taos. While living in Taos from 1952-57, her work reflected an abstractionist tone, exhibited today at the Harwood Museum of Art.
After statehood in 1912, a wave of academically-trained realist painters came who were attracted to the land, the light and the native cultures. They painted images of the native peoples, their homes and the surrounding landscape.
The Taos art colony was an art colony founded in Taos, New Mexico, by artists attracted by the culture of the Taos Pueblo and northern New Mexico. The history of Hispanic craftsmanship in furniture, tin work, and other mediums also played a role in creating a multicultural tradition of art in the area.
The most obvious subjects for your art school portfolio artworks are traditional ones such as figures, portraits, self-portraits, still lifes, landscapes, interior spaces, forms from nature, architecture, and others.
Exploration: Look for inspiration in the environment around you. Notice the beauty of nature, architecture, people or everyday objects in your surroundings. Look for unique perspectives that grab your attention. Conduct research on topics of interest to you and gather suggestions.
In order to be able to focus, it is best to identify a subject matter that you can stay with long enough to really become involved with it. Even better would be to choose a subject that you are really, really passionate about.
