7 Simple, Budget Friendly After Christmas Winter Decorating Ideas You'll Love - Life on Kaydeross Creek (2024)

Does your home feel naked after you take down all your Christmas decorations? I know it feels especially empty when we take down our Christmas tree. After all the bright lights and beautiful holiday decorations, the winter season can definitely be a little blah. Here are some winter decorating ideas to add a bit of cozy warmth to your winter home without spending a fortune.

1. Reuse as much neutral Christmas decor as possible.

This one saves you time and money. If you’re like me, this time of year makes you want to clear the clutter and start with a fresh look. The beauty is you don’t need to “undecorate” completely. Use those faux greens, bottle brush & mini trees (with no ornaments, of course), twinkle lights and fairy lights. For a fresh look, lighten things up by using less of it and by adding in more white and warm neutral tones.

For added texture and interest in the space, add the greens in unique vessels or in unexpected ways, like baskets.

2. Use natural elements – hit up the outdoors for some freebies!

Pine cones, birch logs and fresh greens can be a budget friendly way to update your winter space. Don’t forget to bake the bugs out of the pine cones first!

To change things up a bit, spray paint those pinecones white or just paint the edges so they look snow covered!

3. Shop after Christmas sales

These can be a great place to find winter decor ON CLEARANCE. Michaels or Hobby Lobby’s after Christmas sales feature many of the things you’d use for winter like pine cones, greens and even mini trees which can also be used for winter decorating.

I found these at Michaels on sale this week for 70% off.

4. Make DIY snow globes.

This is one of my favorite winter decorating ideas and I even use them for Christmas, too. Pick up glass jars at thrift stores or the Dollar Store. Use inexpensive Epsom salt (make sure you get the UNSCENTED version) and tiny bottle brush trees or little houses to create a winter scene.

These add such personality to a space and when grouped together, make a really pretty winter vignette.

5. Add soft, warm light.

The warm glow of white candles always makes the space feel cozy year round but why not leave out the twinkle lights and fairy lights. You can also get a similar look by adding an extra lamp and lower watt bulbs to your lamps for a warmer glow.

We like the glow of the lights from our small tree so much, we decided to keep it in the family room for a bit longer, no ornaments, of course.

How do I make my home cozy for winter?

6. Stick with neutral pillows and blankets

So this one may or may not be a way to save money but who doesn’t like to cuddle up when it’s below freezing outside?? (ironically, I also do this in the summer when the air conditioner is on, LOL). The best way to save money on these is by sticking with neutral pillows (I like to use pillow covers for easier storage) and throw blankets that can be mixed together easily and used in different spaces and for different seasons.

7. Use inexpensive digital prints or take your own pictures.

Take your own – you don’t need an expensive camera for this. Most phones take really good pictures which you can either print yourself on photo paper or have printed at Walmart, Walgreens or Staples to name a few.

I took this one at our camp. It would be pretty in a black frame with a white mat.

Look around your neighborhood for a group of snow covered trees, hanging icicles or a frozen pond for example.

You can see my whole post on creating your own art with photos here.

Digital prints – I share this every season because it’s such an inexpensive way to decorate!! You can also purchase digital downloads on Etsy which are some of my favorites. If you’re not sure how to do this you can watch my video on Youtube on how to download them and print them at Staples.

Throw either of them in a thrift store frame and you’re all set.

Bonus: Make inexpensive pretty paper snow flakes.

This is super simple and will only need a few paper lunch bags, a glue stick and some twine. You can get a full tutorial here.

Definitely a big bang for your buck.
