Biology

Flapple (Pokémon) - Bulbapedia, the community-driven Pokémon encyclopedia (7)

Flapple with its wings folded

Flapple is a green, worm-like dragon Pokémon with a light green underside and yellow eyes. It uses parts of an apple to form its body. The top part of the apple sits on the top of its head, with a single horn sticking out; the bottom of the apple is attached to its tail; and the sides are attached to its limbs, which have three-fingered hands, allowing them to act as wings.

Flapple's cheeks store acid strong enough to induce chemical burns and corrode metal. It can attack by spitting this acid at its targets. It is also able to disguise itself as an apple by folding its wings. Flapple repairs the apple on its body by using its body fluid. Flapple with clay-colored apples are generally stronger than its peers, and have won many battles.

Flapple is the only known Pokémon capable of learning the move Grav Apple. Flapple, Appletun, and their pre-evolution Applin are the only known Pokémon that can have Ripen as an Ability.

Forms

Flapple has a Gigantamax form.

When exposed to Gigantamax energy, Flapple's body changes, becoming larger and stouter. A giant apple engulfs most of its body, leaving only its head, neck and tail exposed. Its leaf-like eyestalks stand up straight and it has a piece of the apple covering its head, with yellow carvings on it resembling nostrils. Its cheeks are rounded and it hangs its mouth open, letting its red tongue loll out. Its neck becomes taller and stretches upwards, while its tail becomes elongated and wraps around the base of the apple. Three red clouds float around its neck. Gigantamax Flapple and Appletun are physically identical.

Gigantamax Flapple produces huge amounts of sweet nectar, which overflows from the top of its apple. The nectar's intense aroma pours out when it stretches its neck, and this aroma is so sweet it can cause other Pokémon to faint. Gigantamax Flapple is the only known Pokémon capable of using the G-Max Move G-Max Tartness.

Trivia

  • Flapple is the lightest Pokémon to learn Heavy Slam.
  • Flapple and Appletun are the only Pokémon to have physically identical Gigantamax forms, although they are still treated as different Pokémon as they have distinct Pokédex entries, G-Max Moves, and cries.
    • This is also the only instance of two different species of Pokémon that can be physically identical without the use of Transform, Imposter, or Illusion.
  • Flapple and its evolutionary family:
    • are the only Pokémon that are in the Grass and Dragon Egg Groups.
    • require only 600,000 experience points to reach level 100, the lowest among Generation VIII Pokémon, and the lowest among Dragon-type Pokémon along with Altaria.

Origin

Flapple, like its evolutionary relatives, appears to be based on the popular image of a worm burrowing into an apple, as well as a pun on the wyrm, a type of dragon — hence its Dragon typing. Flapple may also reference winged dragons such as the wyvern, amphiptere, or some depictions of the Lindworm. Appearance wise, Flapple has visual similarities with lizards, such as the gecko.

Given its flying apple motif and signature move, Grav Apple, Flapple could also be based on the tale of Newton's apple. Popularized by Voltaire, it claimed the English natural philosopher Sir Isaac Newton had the first thought of his system of gravity upon seeing an apple falling from a tree.

Flapple's Gigantamax form appears to be based on a caramel apple, a candy apple or a baked apple, and its ability to make Pokémon faint due to its sweetness may be a reference to a diabetic coma. Flapple and Appletun having identical Gigantamax forms may be a reference to convergent evolution, which can lead to separate organisms independently developing identical characteristics and body plans.

Name origin

Flapple may be a combination of flap and apple.

Appryu may be a combination of apple and 竜 ryū (dragon).
